Although my days in school are long since past, the seasonal transition from summer to fall always brings with it a “back to school” kind of energy for me. It is an opportunity to reflect on my priorities, and to consciously focus my efforts on what I see as the most important work to undertake right now.
Common Ground Healing Arts opened the doors to its beautiful space in the Jefferson School City Center nine months ago. To paraphrase words of wisdom spoken by a staff member in a recent meeting, Common Ground’s gestation began this past January, but it’s not quite finished being born. Those of you who know me also know that I have a son who will turn one year old at the end of this month, so you will pardon me for seeing the obvious parallel here. Nine months after its opening, Common Ground is getting ready to be born.
In this same meeting, one of our Board members acknowledged that now is a time when Common Ground has a lot on our plate, and he shared a technique we can use to ground and orient ourselves in these more dynamic times. Every morning when we begin our day, he suggested that we ask ourselves: What is the one most important thing I can do today? And then we set about doing it.
The most important thing happening this week is the release of our new fall schedule. We are excited to welcome 10 new massage therapists, acupuncturists, and yoga teachers to our team. We have added more hours in our community acupuncture clinic, as well as additional massage therapy appointments. We now have over 30 yoga and meditation classes per week, including new weekday evening series classes. Most of our yoga offerings could be safely attended by a beginner, and we have added new classes for more experienced students, too! Common Ground has now been open through three seasons, and every day we are meeting the needs of the community and becoming more fully who we are.
If we follow the metaphor of gestation, this fall is when Common Ground is truly being born. During this season of transition, starting each day with conscious focus will support us in directing our energy effectively and bringing our deepest intentions into being. What is the most important thing that you can do today?
