We all know it feels best to be pain-free. But a healthy back offers far more benefits than that:
The central nervous system is composed of the brain and the spinal cord, which travels through the spine. The spinal cord sends out branches between each pair of vertebrae to every part of the body—limbs as well as organs. When the back is healthy, there is good blood flow and good spacing between each of the vertebrae, allowing for strong nerve signal conduction between the brain and the body. A healthy back is also strong and flexible, allowing for ease of movement as we walk, run, twist, bend, lift, and reach for things. But as the effects of gravity, over- or under-exercising, poor diet, injury, surgery, medications and more accumulate over time, we can find ourselves with a fraction of the vitality and function we once enjoyed.
In this 5-week Holistic Yoga for a Healthy Back series, you will learn how to reverse this trend and develop skills, knowledge, and habits to improve your quality of life, which may prevent future injury and/or surgery as well. This class is gentle, informative, fun and therapeutic, and would benefit students with little or lots of yoga experience.
PROPS NEEDED: A yoga mat, 2 or more foam yoga blocks, a yoga strap or robe belt, a yoga blanket or beach towels, a tennis ball is helpful.
